Melissa Hayman
Mel started her laboratory research in 2009 when she worked in the Gestational Diabetes Laboratory at Peninsula Medical School.  During this time she received a gold crest award from the British Science Association for undertaking a Nuffield bursary alongside the project.  Mel then went on to study for a degree in Biomedical Sciences at St George's University of London during which time she also received a Society for Endocrinology Summer Studentship. Mel's final year project was into the effects of regulators of nitric oxide upon vascular smooth muscle cell biology including migration, invasion and the balance between cell proliferation and death.  After completing her BSc, Mel joined the WHRI MRes programme graduating with a Distinction and then joined our group to study for a  PhD into the links between platelet function and platelet mRNA.  Having finished her PhD studies in autumn 2017, Mel now works at National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC).

Rebecca Knowles
Rebecca graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Manchester in 2005.  During that time she was also awarded a 1st class BSc (Hons) in Pathology.  Rebecca chose to complete her foundation training at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester, before coming to London to undertake her core medical training.  She then spent two years training at Barts and the London trust and was awarded her Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP).  Rebecca is currently pursuing a career in cardiology as a North East London cardiology trainee.  With the support of a British Heart Foundation fellowship, Rebecca took time out of her clinical training to study for a PhD researching the interactions between platelets, endothelial cells and anti-platelet agents, providing herself with invaluable experience to build a career in cardiology and academia.  She is now back in clinical training.

Nick Kirkby
Nick graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2008 with a first class BSc in Biological Sciences with honours in pharmacology.   During his undergraduate studies Nick won the Bernard Ginsborg Prize (2003) and the Tom B. B. Crawford Memorial Prize (2004).  Nick stayed on in Edinburgh to study for a PhD with Dr Gillian Gray at the Centre for Cardiovascular Science investigating the role of endothelin receptor subtypes in the response to acute vascular injury.  After his PhD studies were completed, Nick remained in Edinburgh as a post-doctoral fellow to work on the role of mitogen activated protein kinase phosphotase-2 in angiogenesis and vascular function.  For his post-graduate work at Edinburgh Nick won the ET-11 Research Recognition Award, awarded from the American Physiological Society (2009), and the Cardiovascular Symposium Student Poster Prize, awarded by University of Edinburgh (2009).  Nick moved to join us in 2010 to work between us and Prof. Jane Mitchell on our collaborative project on the roles of COX-2 within the cardiovascular system.  In 2013 Nick won an Imperial College post-doctoral fellowship.

Thomas Hoefer
Thomas completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Applied Sciences in Vienna with a Master's degree (with distinction) in Biomedicine/Analytics.  For his master's thesis, which he conducted in Dr Thomas Czerny's lab (University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna), Thomas contributed to the optimisation of a mammalian-two hybrid method for the analysis of protein-protein interactions and acquired a number of skills in molecular biology.  After his graduation Thomas worked as a research assistant at the Medical University of Vienna (Insitute of Pharmacology) in the group of Prof Michael Freissmuth before moving to London in October 2010 to start his PhD in Tim's group on a three year MRC-funded PhD-studentship.  Thomas completed his PhD studies in June 2014, and stayed with the group for a few more months to continue his experiments into the mechanisms underlying thrombosis formation in patients with elevated levels of platelet turnover associated with mixed platelet populations, and the meaning of platelet function tests.  The first paper from this study was published in 2015.  After his PhD Thomas moved to be a post-doctoral research fellow at the BakerIDI in Melbourne, Australia.

Francesca Rauzi
In 2010 Francesca completed her Master’s Degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology (Pharm.D) at the Universita’ degli Studi di Milano, Italy.  During the final year of her degree she conducted an experimental thesis with Prof. Elena Tremoli in the laboratory of Pharmacology of Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis, where she evaluated the effect of a new thromboxane receptor antagonist, terutroban, on the processes of kidney damage in hypertension.  In January 2011 Francesca joined Tim’s group to start a three year BHF-funded PhD project. The aim of her studies were to determine the enzyme sources of the major prostanoid and HETE products released by activated platelets and, ultimately, investigate the role these eicosanoids play in the regulation of thrombus formation.  Francesca received her PhD in 2015 and then moved to be a post-doctoral research fellow at Imperial College.

Bennett Shih
Bennett completed his BSc and MSc in Pharmacy and Pharmacology at the National Defense Medical Center, Taiwan.  He then worked as a medical officer and pharmacist.  In 2009, he returned to the Department and Graduate Institute of Pharmacology, National Defense Medical Center to be a lecturer.  Under the supervision of Prof. Chin-Chen Wu, he investigated the pathological mechanisms and pharmacological treatments of sepsis in various experimental models. Bennett joined our group in August 2013 as a visiting scientist for 1 year to work on the interaction of fresh and stored human platelets.

Anna Perrone
In 2011 Anna held a fellowship for the, “Evaluation of oxidative stress in Beta thalassemia major and intermedia patients by a non–invasive Raman spectroscopy-based measurement of skin carotenoids”.  In January 2012 Anna moved on to study for for her PhD in Mediterranean Fruticulture at the University of Palermo under the supervision of Prof.ssa Maria Antonietta Livrea, with her project focussed upon the study of oxidative stress and  antioxidant status in vitro and in vivo.  Currently, Anna was a visiting scientist for 6 months and studied the interactions of short-lived mediators and anti-platelet agents in the control of platelet function.

Elias Petrou
Elias commenced his medical degree studies at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2009.  In 2012 he intercalated in Molecular Therapeutics at the William Harvey institute for which he obtained a first class honours degree.  His project under Tim's supervision, investigating the role of hydrogen peroxide on platelet function, won him the British Pharmacological Society prize 2013 for undergraduate clinical students.  As part of his medical degree dissertation, Elias continued to work under Tim's supervision to pursue further his interest in oxidative stress on platelets.
